On Jan 19th I ran the 2014 Celebrate Community 5k/1k Fun Run. The race was very well put together and very fast.
My Race: I finished 2nd in my Age Group and 19th out 181 (15th in my gender). My time was 22:54 (7:23 splits) I was not impressed with this pace, but at the same time I was not sad with it compared to my last races. This race will help me set the stage for the rest of my season.
Equipment:
Spy DAFT sunglasses
Fuel Belt race belt to hold my number
Under Armor Thermal Gear
Finish Hard beanie
Asics Noosa Tri 8
THE RACE: Overall winner was a 15:54, there was no way I was catching that white Kenyan. Overall the race was very flat beyond a bridge you had to cross at the .5 mile and 2.5 mile markers. The nice part was that it was fairly short so what goes up must come down. The course was an out and back and was a very nice community 5k. The race director was a Rabbi I am guessing because he was wearing a yarmulke. He was very funny and definitely knew how to work the crowd. The race prize for a top finish in your age group was a $10 gift card to Potomac river running and will be something that I will use in the future.
Race rating 5/5 this is a must for anyone in the northern VA area looking for a good course to PR on.
Future Goals for this Season.
5k - 21:00 (7:00 pace)
10k - 47:00 (7:43 pace)
Half marathon - 1:45:30 (8:03 pace)

BONK BREAKER TASTE TEST
Hey all! Today my mother and I had a taste testing of Bonk Breakers I have had the products before during an Ironman, but never really payed attention to what tastes they where. I would just snag them from the aid and keep riding and then eat as needed to make sure I had nutrition to finish the race. Since Bonk Breaker is Big Sexy Racing Sponsor I figured Id do a taste test and figure out which flavors I like. I will list my Top 3 Then Honorable mentions.
Honorable Mention
Coconut Cashew
This flavor was great and anyone who loves Coconut would enjoy it.
#3 Peanut butter and Jelly.
This flavor was awesome, it tasted like the peanut butter and jelly sandwich that had been sitting in the car all morning after a long ride or run. It was nice and gewy and the jelly just took over.
#2 Peanut butter and Chocolate Chip
This flavor was very chocolaty and I love chocolate. I've never put the peanut butter and chocolate together but I will definitely have to try out it outside of the Bar.
#1 Blueberry Oat
This was the most surprising flavors to me, I enjoyed this and got a mouthful of blueberry's every bite! This will hands down be go to all the time!
Overall all the flavors were good and the above are my personal favorites. Get yours at the Link Below:

Recovery Weeks
This week has not been my best workout week, my running times and bike times are all little slower. I have not yet taken a recovery week in my training which I think is a big issue. My times have been slower than I want them to be, I think this is due to me going as hard as I can every week for 12 weeks, and not taking one or two off here and there. By taking a week off I mean do alot more active recovery just lower the pace and distances off everything by 15-20% to allow your body to take in all the hard work youve done. Todays workout was 3x1 mile at a 1:1

REV3
Today I received a very interesting phone call from Rev3 Triathlon. They called me confirming my registration for Quassy Olympic distance and were wondering if i had any questions about the race. That was really awesome, someone is running PR show over at Rev3 and is killing it! I thought this was one of the coolest phone calls I have ever gotten just making the race seem more like they are doing it for me, and they love that I am there almost as if I'm a pro. I thought this call was so cool and Rev3 made the race seem so much more personal than just another race. KEEP IT UP REV3!! I went 1:07 on the bike today spending a total of 50min in Zone5 keep it up guys!

HAPPY REST DAY
Happy rest Day everyone! Today were going to talk about training partners. Training partners are crucial to some people to becoming better racers. What training partners do is push you to always do better each workout, no one like coming in last especially when there's only two people in the race. Training partners do a multitude of different tasks, they always push you to better yourself, they are someone to talk to during that long ride, and they are the one person that sees when you manage to PR on half marathon on a training run. Training partners can help guide you as an athlete, I highly recommend finding one. Your training partner doesn't have to live near you they could be someone you know halfway across the country, but you two share your workout times over Facebook. This isnt a Sermon just something to think about :)

First outside ride
Today was my first ride outside in a couple months. My bike that I got in October has 400 miles on it, 350 of that being on the trainer. So finally getting out and about was super awesome and fun. There were major cross winds though out, and it felt like every time i got into the rhythm a huge gust would come across me and i would have to slow down again to gain control. Oh well what can you do? Hope everyone else had a happy sunday and enjoyed watching Payton and Collin win!

5min Repeats
Today was a hectic day in the Fischer house hold with water pipes breaking, and a slew of other things. But luckily I made it onto the bike at 9PM which is late for me but workouts have happened later. Always try and do something that's what I say, actually what I say is what is John Doing Right Now? John is another person on the George Mason Triathlon Club with me, and he is a bad ass at racing. So for all my workouts I always ask myself what is john doing right now when ever I feel like quitting. But today's workouts was 5min at Z5 on repeat! :) Who do you all compare yourselves to?

400 Repeats
Today I worked on my 400 repeats, at a 6:19 pace with a 1:1 work to rest. I am currently in my off season so speed is the name of the game. Work outs are relatively shorter, while at the same time focusing on going fast. I herd a great Lecture from Micheal Arnstien talking about how if you make your mile faster, in turn all of your distance's will be faster. It makes sense because it would Increase your LT (Lactate Threshold) and Vo2 Max, simply from mile training. If we look at some of the more successful triathletes in the younger age groups a majority of them are Cross Country runners from high school who were running 16-18min 5ks. This is because they are already coming into the sport with a high LT, and can handle the workloads. They may not be moving at that PR 5k pace but they are not far off it, only about 20-30sec for a 10k. So base line of the story is that if you make your mile faster all of your other times will be faster as well. Hope you all are working on your challenge for the week! -Chris

Bike Day
Todays workout is relatively easy 80min on the bike, however you want to do it! Nothing to difficult, most of my day was spent playing World of Warcraft simply because today was cold out. It was that kinda cold when its not even fun to drive outside. So i spent my day leveling my Brew master Monk. Brew masters are possibly the funnest class I have played to date. The way they work is they avoid taking damage by drinking beer and stumbling around how is that not awesome? Overall I would recommend putting time into trying a Brew master if you haven't. This also opens up a challenge to everyone; I think I'm going to give a weekly challenge to my readers. These wont be challenges that are unattainable, just simply a little something for you to appreciate the world a little more, or appreciate yourself. This weeks challenge will be try something new! This challenge is so easy, it can take truly 10min. Ex If you've never done yoga, go on too YouTube and look up yoga class, you will find short 5-10min yoga classes and just go through it. Try anything just something you've never done! Goodluck, and leave comments on what your doing!

Review of DAFT Sunglasses by SPY Optic
Happy Rest Day Everyone!! Today is the big day, my first review! We will be talking about the DAFT sunglasses made by SPY Optic. At the end of the Review I will post Links to where you can obtain your pair.
Overall on first glance I thought the glasses were a little big for my head, because I am one of the many small headed Americans out there. But once I put them on they fit very snugly and were a lot lighter than most sunglasses I have worn before. I used to use Oakly Jawbones and they were awesome but a little on the heavy side compared to the DAFT. Upon running with them there was no jostling around on my face, once I set them where I wanted them they were not moving, so for fit and feel give them a 2.5/2.5.
One of my biggest pet peeves with sunglasses is having bright spots, or portions where light gets in. These spots are the worst! Along with them comes the blind spots from the plastic. Nothing sucks more than trying to see someone coming behind you or on your side and missing them because you have big piece of plastic in your way. The DAFT do not have blind spots because of the one lens design and minimal light gets in around the sides. The only time I had issue with the light was when I was trying to look way out my peripherals but beyond that there was no light actually getting in. Fog was not an issue with these sunglasses. For light and Blind Spots 2.5/2.5.
Now for looks, the DAFT are a very racing style of sunglasses. They are sleek and make anyone who wears them look like they will be going fast. The ear pieces on the team version have blue SPY logos and blue gummy pieces around the ear. The general pair come with black, on both the black and white versions.
Style 2.5/2.5.
A big thing I know for me when it comes to sunglasses is being able to change out my lenses for the occasion. The DAFT make it super easy to change out the lenses; its simply a matter of clipping off the nose piece and ear pieces and then putting them on the new lenses. The whole process takes a matter 10 seconds, and the pieces clip off and on with enough ease that I'm not scared that I will break the lenses by using too much pressure. Lens Change 2.5/2.5.
FINAL 10/10
I would recommend the DAFT to anyone. The DAFT have become my go glasses for both cycling and running and you will see me wearing them in 2014! Below are links to where you can pick up a pair of the DAFT.

2x2 Z4
Today's workout was good, it felt good to run for a longer distance than 400m. I enjoy my middle distance runs the most, anything between 5-10miles. 5-10 miles seems to be where I get my best paces, and I also just enjoy these workouts the most. Even though today was one of my favorite workouts it was slower than I wanted. I will chalk it up to having to slow down to avoid Ice on the trail I was running on. A 30sec slower mile is always better than a hospital bill. Another bright thing was this was my first run in 35 degree weather which was pretty good. Except for ending the run with the cold cough's but it is always cool to see all the heat coming off your body, it gives you little mental boost of showing how hard you worked.
Today I also used my SPY DAFT sunglasses on the run and since tomorrow is a rest day I will post a nice in depth review of them. I probably wont have a whole lot bad to say about them because I loved them, if that gives you any idea of how the review will go.

2x20' Z4
Happy Weekend everyone! Todays workout was 2x20' at Z4, which sadly did not happen as well as expected. Today I made it through my first 20' and it was more difficult than I expected. I finished the first 20 and only made it about 5 minutes into my second 20' before I had to stop, I know there are many different discussions about just finishing sets and listening to your body. But today I decided to listen to my body. My normal Z4 is between 153-166bpm,in starting my second 20' it took me 3min to even crack 145, my legs just were not having it. This is kind of a bummer but I decided to end it before possibly causing injury to myself, which in tern would put me way behind on training, as opposed to missing 20' of a set. Tomorrow should be better though because it is one of my favorite run sets ever! 2x2 mile at Z4.
On a brighter news Today I received my first piece of Big Sexy Racing gear! The DAFT sunglasses made by SPY!! Upon first looks and feel they are awesome and I will be posting a review of them later this week after wearing them through a few workouts.
Cheers and Happy Saturday Everyone!!

Rest day!
HAPPY REST DAY!!! Fridays are normally my rest day along with Mondays. I know most of you are saying a triathlete only working out 5 days a week? The answer is no I really only have one rest day and that is Mondays, Fridays I spend my time playing Underwater Hockey using it as an "active recovery" workout. I believe that taking a day off training and doing something else is almost essential for any athlete. We all love swimming, biking, and running, but its good to break the cycle and do something else. This is more of a mental break more than anything, just to be able to workout, not think about my heart rate zone, what is my training partner doing right now? What is everyone else in my age group doing right now? This active recovery is basically time for me to punch out and do something active I love doing and im not worried about the outcome necessarily, but just having fun. I highly recommend an active rest day to everyone no matter what sport you play, simply to take a mental break from training.

6x400
After playing hours of World of Warcraft on my Monk, I decided to get off my butt and finally work out. I jumped into my Toyota Tacoma named Six or Caprica (from Battle Star Galatica, if you havent seen that show, put it on while you on the trainer); I headed to my secret training spot, a gym in my grandmothers retirement community.
What isnt included in this picture is the 25M pool they have in the same building, this gym is free for me because my grandmother lives there, and the best part. NO ONE is ever there, its always wide open! Also the another great bonus is that my grandmother gets me Dairy Queen after every workout, truly makes the workouts that much sweeter knowing that Im working for DQ! Its the day by day wins which make the battle worth fighting.
Today I ran on the treadmill doing go fast work. My work out was 6x400 at 6:12 pace with a 1:1 work to rest ratio. I have never been a fast runner and am currently trying to work on it. My PR for a 10K in a Triathlon is 58:08... that's not very good, especially since my 5k PR is 20:36. The goal is to break a 50min 10K in a Olympic Distance this year, and a 1:45 half marathon at the 70.3 distance. Tonight I will be drinking Dogfish Head 60min headed into tomorrows rest day while leveling my Monk in World of Warcraft.
P.S. Watch Battle Star Galatica on the trainer using Netflix! (this will be called The Flix in future posts)

5x5
Jan 1, 2014.
As of Today I am officially a member of Team Big Sexy Racing (BSR). This team is formed by Chris McDonald an elite triathlete who is a 6x IRONMAN champion... enough said. Upon submitting my application I waited for about a month for Chris to announce his selections. This was possibly the longest month of my life... but not really because it was only 30 days. Once the email came asking if I wanted to join I was so ecstatic. I was truly jumping up and down at work with excitement, luckily for me and everyone else only me and one other person were there.
Big Sexy Racing is an elite group of amateurs who are like minded people, and enjoy racing very fast. I have only competed in triathlon for a year and in that span have completed 2 Olympic Distances, a 70.3, and IRONMAN Louisville. I did not do any of these races fast, but I did not do them slow either. I was right about the middle of the pack for all of my races. I was also training to survive in the sport of triathlon not to actually move my body at a relatively fast pace. Before joining team BSR I already had the intention of becoming a more serious racer and joining the elite at the 70.3 world championships in 2014. Seeing the abilities and the "eliteness" of my new team I am even more inspired to train hard and race faster. I will keep the world or minimal readers of this blog posted on how training is going and race reports throughout the year of 2014. This blog is intended to help spread the word of our awesome sponsors, "training secrets" of the elite, and how a college student balances training, video games, girlfriend, and applying to graduate school! With that being said and today almost done, today's workout will be on the trainer watching Dexter, with a main set of 5x5 (3min rest between each) at z5.
Cheers! -Chris
